First edition of Fundacion MAPFRE Volleyfest

The Malta Volleyball Association organised the first edition of the Fundacion MAPFRE Volleyfest between the 6th and 8th July.

This event, held at Cottonera Sports Complex, brought together the U-18 teams of Spanish club AE Carles Vallbona, together with those of local clubs Balzan Flyers, Paola Volley and Swieqi Phoenix Volleyball. The competition was won by local side Swieqi Phoenix Volleyball, who beat AE Carles Valbona 2-0 in the final played on Sunday morning.

During the Volleyfest, a series of friendly matches were also played by the U14 teams of the Spanish side and various local teams in this category, including Balzan Flyers, Birkirkara Volleyball Club, Fleur De Lys Volleyball, Paola Volley, Sport Malta, and Swieqi Phoenix Volleyball. AE Carles Vallbona hails from Catalunya and was set up in 1997. Since then, it has established itself as one of the top clubs in the region. Today the club boasts a nursery of more than 300 players.

Commenting on the event, MAPFRE Middlesea President and CEO Felipe Navarro said that it was a pleasure to see the name of Fundacion MAPFRE once again associated with the well-being of young people. He reminded those present that Fundacion MAPFRE has, through its CAQLAQ programme, been promoting a healthy lifestyle for children. Thanks to its association with the Malta Volleyball Association, Fundacion MAPFRE has been bringing to thousands of local schoolchildren the benefits of exercise and sport. “Our support for this Volleyfest is a continuation of our mission to emphasise the link between young people and a healthy lifestyle”, he said.

MVA President Jesmond Saliba said that “The aim of the Fundacion MAPFRE Volleyfest, which is being held in collaboration with Sport Malta and the support of Fundacion MAPFRE, is to bring together local and foreign youth players to compete in a spirit of sportsmanship and friendship, and particularly to give local players a chance to meet and play against foreign opposition. This year’s edition is the first of what we intend organising as an annual event”.
