Prime Minister inaugurates Middlesea Tribute Exhibition

The Prime Minister Dr Lawrence Gonzi recently inaugurated the exhibition ’25 Years of Maltese Art’ organised by Middlesea Insurance p.l.c. as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations.

The exhibition, which pays tribute to Maltese art over the past 25 years, includes the works of 25 renowned Maltese artists. These include: Caesar Attard, Paul Haber, Frank Portelli, Isabelle Borg, Alfred Camilleri, Alfred Chircop, Gabriel Caruana, Harry Alden, Antoine Camilleri, Carmenu Mangion, Anthony Calleja, Pawl Carbonaro, Anthony Spagnol, Salvu Mallia, Josette Caruana, Vince Briffa, Neville Ferry, Ray Pitre’, Luciano Micallef, Marco Cremona, Norbert Francis Attard, Austin Camilleri, John Grima, Richard England and Patrick Fenech.

In a brief speech, the Prime Minister praised Middlesea Group for its valid role over the years, through the patronage of local artists. Dr Gonzi also praised the collective exhibition saying that through these works of some of Malta’s best artists, one can observe at a glance how trends and tendencies in art evolved in the last quarter of a century. This, he said, placed Malta in an analogous position as the rest of Europe.

Middlesea Group Chairman and CEO, Mr Mario C. Grech, also addressed the guests at the inauguration. He described the Group’s corporate social responsibility policy as a continuing commitment to improve the quality of life of the Group’s workforce, their families, the local community and society in general. Mr Grech said that “Middlesea has great honour in being a patron and promoter of the arts and culture in Malta.” He also spoke about “This pioneering step of creating a greater awareness of the works of Maltese artists has continued and today I am aware that our annual calendar which features local art is awaited and sought after by various art lovers locally and overseas.”

The Chairman stated that the exhibition was conceived to convey the multi-faceted development of Maltese art alongside the 25 years of activity of Middlesea. “All the works presented today were produced during this 25 year period so, in a way, they are intertwined with our history,” he said.

On occasion of the exhibition, Middlesea Insurance also published a commemorative catalogue which places the exhibited works in their historic context.
