Middlesea Group recently sponsored the Malta Library and Information Association (MaLIA) which is dedicated to the improvement and raising of professional and educational standards of the library profession in Malta and Gozo.

The sponsorship will support the Association to launch the Report on the State of Maltese Libraries, Msida. The MaLIA carried out a data collection exercise on a random sample of libraries in Malta and Gozo. This included national, public, academic, school and specialised libraries.

Through the report, MaLIA intends to gauge the stage of development of Maltese libraries, to outline the difficulties faced by different types of libraries and to offer recommendations on immediate and long-term solutions.

The report highlights issues relating to the accessibility for persons with disability, the security and state of library buildings, health and safety standards, the condition of library collections, budget considerations, library services, automation, human resources and various indicators relating to library development and performance.

Speaking about the sponsorship, Middlesea Group Chairman Mr Mario C. Grech pointed out that this donation is in line with the Company’s corporate social responsibility policy.

“Libraries are indispensable in the community in order to encourage reading. Reading plays an invaluable role in the development of all members of society,” Mr Grech said.
